Baltimore Urban Debate League: Guidelines

Guidelines  |  Grantee List

Note: This program has ended and is no longer accepting applications.

The Urban Debate Program enriches the academic experience of students from Baltimore City’s public high schools through participation in team policy debate as an in-school and after-school program. The Baltimore Urban Debate League is especially interested in students with untapped potential. In team policy debate, students formulate specific solutions to a policy problem of national interest, arguing both the affirmative and negative sides of the same topic. In the process, students learn to think critically about the world around them, to look at issues from many perspectives, to conduct research, and to develop logical argumentation skills. The League experience also encourages and prepares students to pursue post-secondary education and scholarship opportunities. Connection to the regional and national forensic community stimulates dialogue and respect between students from Baltimore City and those from more affluent communities. The Program is administered by a partnership among the Baltimore Urban Debate League, the Baltimore City Public School System and Towson University.

If you would like to learn more about the program, please contact Pamela King at pking@sorosny.org or 410-234-1091 ext. 210.
