A Film Screening and Conversation on New Muslim Cool

Is America Really Post-Racial?

Location: Baltimore, MD
Event Date: March 2, 2010

Featuring an interactive spoken word performance, film screening, and panel discussion with the film’s protagonist and the film maker, this event will examine the emerging worldview of a new generation of Americans.

The film New Muslim Cool is told through the lens of Hamza Pérez, a Puerto Rican independent hip-hop artist who converts from Catholicism to Islam in the aftermath of 9/11. The documentary traces Pérez's journey from the East Coast to the post-industrial Midwest. From marriage and parenting to his art and activism, this snapshot of Pérez’s life highlights the diverse experiences and generational changes that are shaping the new American Dream.

After the screening of New Muslim Cool, Bakari Kitwana, author of The Hip-Hop Generation, will moderate a panel discussion. The panel will include Nura Maznavi, staff attorney from Muslim Advocates; filmmaker Jennifer Taylor; and independent hip-hop artist MC Hamza, who is the subject of the film.
