Open Society Foundation–London

The Open Society Foundation–London is an independent UK charity that houses the international advocacy office as well as a number of global initiatives of the Open Society Foundations. These include:

The Open Society Foundation–London also hosts grantee initiatives including:

  • Publish What You Pay, a global civil society coalition that helps citizens of resource-rich developing nations hold their governments accountable for the management of revenues from the oil, gas, and mining industries;
  • Media Legal Defence Initiative, which trains lawyers in media law, defends journalists’ rights and fights legal cases, and represents media outlets and journalists before international tribunals;
  • Transparency and Accountability Initiative, a donor collaborative that aims to expand the impact, breadth, and coordination of funding and activity in the transparency and accountability field, as well as explore applications of this work in new areas.

The office facilitates collaboration, builds donor partnerships, and serves as a channel for information and contacts between the the Open Society Foundations and partners in the United Kingdom, including the UK Department for International Development.

It also develops coalitions with long-term NGO partners and raises awareness in UK policy circles about issues of concern to the Open Society Foundations. To that end, the office serves as a key discussion forum where scholars, eminent leaders, and other public figures can present on and debate issues such as the integration of minorities in Europe, international human rights initiatives, and new developments in media and technology.
