The Open Society Foundation–London is an independent UK charity that houses a number of OSI’s global initiatives, including the East East: Partnership Beyond Borders Program, the Media Program, the Information Program, the Early Childhood Program, At Home in Europe, the Public Health Program’s Mental Health Initiative, the Justice Initiative’s Equality and Citizenship Program, some of the staff of the Scholarship Programs and the Central Eurasia Project, and the OSI International Advocacy and Policy team.
The Open Society Foundation also hosts independent initiatives such as Publish What You Pay, a global civil society coalition that helps citizens of resource-rich developing nations hold their governments accountable for the management of revenues from the oil, gas, and mining industries; the European Council on Foreign Relations, a think tank addressing European foreign policy issues; and the Media Legal Defence Initiative, a new organization that trains lawyers in media law, defends journalists’ rights and fights legal cases, and represents media outlets and journalists before international tribunals.
The office facilitates collaboration, builds donor partnerships, and serves as a channel for information and contacts between the Soros foundations network and partners in the United Kingdom, including the UK Department for International Development. It also develops coalitions with long-term NGO partners and raises awareness in UK policy circles about issues of concern to the Soros foundations network. To that end, the office serves as a key discussion forum where scholars, eminent leaders, and other public figures can present on and debate issues such as the integration of minorities in Europe, international human rights initiatives, and new developments in media and technology.
