The mission of the Soros Foundation–Moldova (SFM) is to promote open society and democratic values by providing support for Moldova’s infrastructure and institutions, developing research, promoting public debate, evaluating government policies, and advocating for policy alternatives. SFM launches and finances projects in education, civil society, public administration, law, rural economic development, public health, arts and culture and media and information.

The foundation has extended access to information by developing information centers in rural areas, enhancing libraries, organizing book distribution programs to prisoners, strengthening independent media, diversifying information resources and providing technology training. SFM has worked to improve relations between Moldova’s ethnic Romanian majority and its Ukrainian, Russian, Bulgarian, Gagauzes, Romani and Jewish minorities by promoting multiculturalism, mutual respect, and conflict resolution techniques. The foundation has also organized events to examine strategies for European Union accession and the impact of European integration on Moldovan education, national security, and conflict management.
