The Open Society Institute–Sofia seeks to promote, help develop, and sustain the values, attitudes, and practices of an open society in Bulgaria. The foundation’s priority areas include public life and civic participation, education, public health, human rights, and preparation for entry into the European Union and NATO.

Foundation projects have included the following:

  • organizing international meetings to initiate multilateral planning for projects focusing on international aid, trafficking in human beings, governing multiethnic communities, culture, and refugee policies;
  • providing free legal aid to refugees, migrants, and Roma;
  • informing and mobilizing public opinion against xenophobic incidents;
  • supporting the training of civil servants to better manage social conflict;
  • building trust between local government and diverse constituents; and
  • working to curb domestic violence and achieve equal participation for men and women in social, economic, and political life.
