George Vickers

Director of International Operations
Open Society Foundations

As director of international operations, George R. Vickers oversees the country and regional operations of the Open Society Foundations. From 2002 until July 2007, he served as the Foundations' regional director for Latin America and senior policy analyst at the Open Society Policy Center.

Prior to joining the Foundations, from 1993 to 2001 Vickers was executive director of the Washington Office on Latin America, a center for policy analysis and advocacy that works to secure human rights and promote democracy in the Americas. He was also professor of sociology at the Graduate Center and Brooklyn College of the City University of New York (CUNY) from 1975 to 1997.

He co-directed missions monitoring the implementation of peace agreements in Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Guatemala, and served on numerous election observer delegations in Central and South America. He is the author of several books and has written extensively on the dynamics of revolutionary movements, democratization processes in Latin America, civil-military relations, and United States military strategy.

Vickers has MA and PhD degrees from Washington University in St. Louis.
