Bronwen Manby

Bronwen Manby is senior program advisor with the Africa Governance Monitoring and Advocacy Project (AfriMAP), an initiative of the Open Society Institute network's four African foundations.

AfriMAP, established in 2004, works with the OSI Africa foundations and national civil society organizations to conduct in-depth research and qualitative reporting on respect for the standards adopted by the African Union in the areas of good governance, democracy and respect for the rule of law. AfriMAP also works to strengthen the participation of African citizens and organisations in AU processes, including the AU's African Peer Review Mechanism.  

Manby was previously the deputy director of the Africa division of Human Rights Watch, where she worked for 10 years; she has also worked for human rights organizations in South Africa.  She has degrees from Oxford and Columbia universities, and is trained as a solicitor in England and Wales.  She has written on a wide range of human rights issues in Africa, especially focusing on South Africa and Nigeria, and on continental legal developments.
